Before becoming president in 1969, Nixon served as a navy lieutenant commander during World War II, was elected a United States Senator and member of the House of Representatives for the state of California, supported President Dwight D. Eisenhower as his vice president, and narrowly lost to John F. Kennedy during the presidential election of 1960. In August 1974, Nixon became the first president to resign in light of the Watergate Scandal.
