Though he lost the use of his legs, he nonetheless was elected governor of New York, and went on to serve four terms as president. As president, he created New Deal programs including the Civilian Conservation Corps and Social Security to help the nation recover from the Great Depression, provided a voice of guidance in days of uncertainty with his popular "Fireside Chats," and led the United States through World War II. Though first elected in 1933, he was still president when he died on April 12, 1945, at his retreat in Warm Springs, Georgia.
