Second Inaugural Swearing-In of Vice President Bush
In this photograph, taken by National Geographic photographer Joseph H. Bailey on Sunday, January 20, 1985, Vice President George H. W. Bush accepts his Oath of Office during the second inauguration ceremony of President Ronald Reagan. Associate Justice Potter Stewart of the United States Supreme Court administered the oath, while Second Lady Barbara Bush held open a Bible. The televised, private ceremony was conducted inside the White House. At the time, it was the coldest day on record for a presidential inauguration: the outside temperature stood around 9 degrees Fahrenheit, with a windchill factor equivalent of about 22 degrees below zero. Reagan took the oath that day as required by the Twentieth Amendment of the Constitution. A public inauguration ceremony was held the following day inside the Capitol Rotunda.
