    This photograph is of a portrait of Martha Jefferson Randolph by painter Thomas Sully. Martha Jefferson Randolph was the eldest child of Thomas Jefferson and Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson. She received her education in Philadelphia and Paris and was praised for her intellect. In 1790, she married Thomas Mann Randolph, a Virginia politician. She supported her father's career and also served as White House hostess or first lady when she lived in the White House in 1802-03 and 1805-06. The original oil on canvas portrait by Sully was painted in 1836.

    This engraving by Richard W. Dodson, also known as R. W. Dodson, is a portrait of Lt. Charles Wilkes. The engraving is based on a portrait by Thomas Sully. This engraving is part of the book "Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition" by Charles Wilkes himself. In August of 1838 Wilkes embarked on an expedition that left from Hampton Roads, Virginia and sailed westward around the world. He made stops in Rio de Janeiro, Tierra Del Fuego, Hawaii, the Philippines, Singapore, and the Cape of Good Hope. The expedition ended in New York on June 10, 1842. The book this engraving was published in is a part of the Blair House Collection. James Blair, son of Francis Preston Blair, was a part of the expedition. Blair House, the family's home, is located across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House and has been used as the president's guest house since the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration.

    This 1879 oil on canvas portrait of President Andrew Jackson was completed 42 years after his presidency by Eliphalet Frazer Andrews from an original 1845 portrait by Thomas Sully. Jackson, the 7th president, was president from March 4, 1829 until March 4, 1837. Prior to his election, President Jackson served in the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate for the state of Tennessee and was a major general during the War of 1812.
