    This photograph is of Mitchell Elias Daniels, Jr., director of the Office of Management and Budget during the George W. Bush administration. Daniels formerly served as White House director of political and intergovernmental affairs under President Ronald Reagan, and went on to serve as the governor of Indiana from 2005-2013. On September 11, 2001, Daniels hesitated to evacuate his office in the Old Executive Office Building (later rededicated as the Eisenhower Executive Office Building) and returned to work later that day from the Roosevelt Room in the West Wing.

    In this photograph, Vice President Richard B. Cheney evacuates his West Wing office following the terrorist attacks on the morning of September 11, 2001. For his protection, the vice president was evacuated to a secure bunker beneath the White House, where he continued to work from the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC). That morning, President George W. Bush received news of the suspected terrorist attacks while taking part in a reading demonstration at Emma E. Brooker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida.

    In this photograph, taken on January 23, 1981, President Ronald Reagan gets a haircut in the West Wing Barber Shop from White House barber Milton Pitts. Originally from South Carolina, Pitts became acquainted with politicians and diplomats while working as a barber at the Sheraton-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C. In 1970, he was invited to open a small barber shop in the basement of the West Wing, where he served as barber to presidents Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush.

    This black-and-white photograph shows doorkeeper Patrick "Pat" E. McKenna stationed at his desk outside the president's office in the West Wing in January 1935. McKenna served seven administrations as doorkeeper to the president from 1903-1940. In his role, McKenna interacted daily with politicians, diplomats, and White House staffers and determined which visitors received an audience with the president. He passed away following an illness on July 1, 1940.

    In this photograph, White House Executive Chef Henry Haller receives a turkey in the lobby of the West Wing. The turkey was presented by United States Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen of Illinois (far right) and representatives from the poultry and farming industries on November 10, 1966. President Lyndon B. Johnson was at his Texas ranch for Thanksgiving 1966, which fell on November 24th. While presidents have received turkeys for the holidays as far back as the 1870s, and President Abraham Lincoln did not slaughter a turkey purchased for Christmas dinner at his son Tad's request in 1863, the formalized tradition of a turkey pardon did not start until the 1980s during the administration of Ronald Reagan. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Henry Haller served as executive chef at the White House from 1966-1987.
