Carter served as governor of Georgia prior to his term as president, which began on January 20, 1977 and ended January 20, 1981.

In this photograph by Mary Anne Fackelman, President Jimmy Carter, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and their daughter, Amy, welcome the Saffron United Pipe Band on March 16, 1980. Recognizable for their orange-hued kilts, the Irish pipe band was based in Babylon, New York and came to the North Portico of the White House to serenade the Carter family ahead of St. Patrick's Day.

Leffler, First Lady Rosalynn Carter and White House Assistant Executive Chef Hans Raffert view a gingerbread house in the State Dining Room of the White House on December 10, 1979. Chef Raffert created his first German A-frame gingerbread house for the Nixon White House holiday decorations in 1969, where they subsequently became an annual tradition. Even after the A-frame design was no longer used, Raffert's skills were often used to create the Official White House Gingerbread House until his retirement in 1992.
