The U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps was established in 1960, and provides music in the style of Gen. George Washington's Continental Army. Uniforms reflect army musicians' attire, circa 1784, including black tricorn hats, white wigs, waistcoats, coveralls, and distinct red regimental coats. Tricia Nixon married Edward Cox at a ceremony in the Rose Garden on the White House Grounds, followed by a reception in the East Room. A gazebo was built for the ceremony, which was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Edward Latch. The greenery of the Rose Garden was dotted with roses of reds, pinks, whites, and yellows. The shade of green of the crabapple trees throughout was said to match the shade of the bridesmaids’ layered silk organdy dresses, made by Priscilla of Boston. Though there was an intimate number of invited guests, just beyond it, on the South Lawn, press tents captured the nuptials for the nation.

Ford, First Lady Betty Ford, Queen Elizabeth, and her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, including a State Arrival Ceremony that morning. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited the United States from July 6 to 11 in celebration of the American Bicentennial. The tent, which was temporary, included carpeted floors that were installed under the direction of Mrs. Ford, to protect shoes and ensure wet grass would not cause a slippery surface.

    In this photograph, President Ronald Reagan kicks a soccer ball to American soccer star Steve Moyers on October 14, 1982. Soccer icon Pelé, standing at left, was also a part of the group kick around. Pelé and Moyers were invited to the White House that day to put on a soccer demonstration for two local youth soccer teams -- the Green Raiders and the Stompers -- gathered in the Rose Garden. Pelé and Moyers first met with President Reagan in the Oval Office. Following their demonstration, Pelé (born Edson Arantes do Nascimento) spoke to the young players. President Reagan then tossed the ball and the two teams played a game in the Rose Garden.
