Rabin and Arafat are captured shaking hands on the South Lawn outside the South Portico during the ceremony for the signing the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government Arrangements, the Middle East peace agreement more commonly known as the Oslo Accord. Rabin signed the agreement that day alongside Palestinian negotiator Mahmoud Abbas.

The ceremony took place on the North Lawn of the White House. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Haller served five first families and their distinguished guests as executive chef of the White House from 1966-1987.

The peace treaty was the result of much communication, including two weeks of negotiation overseen by President Carter at Camp David in September 1978. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Haller catered to five first families and their distinguished guests as executive chef at the White House from 1966-1987.

Hussein and Rabin came to the United States to sign a historic peace agreement ending over four decades of conflict between their countries. They signed a full peace treaty in October 1994, settling disputes over land and water use and pledging cooperation in trade and tourism.
