Johnson was vice president at the time of President Kennedy's assassination and became president upon Kennedy's death on November 22, 1963. He was then elected president in his own right in 1964 and served until January 20, 1969. His earlier career included serving in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, where he was the Majority Leader from 1955 until 1961.
