McCain, Jr. McCain was president of the Strategic Service Institute and from 1968-1973 commanded the United States armed forces in the Pacific. McCain's son, John McCain III, later served as a United States Senator for Arizona from 1987-2018, and was the Republican presidential nominee during the 2008 election.

Prom committee members made the tablecloths from sheets based on a suggestion by Susan inspired by decorations used at a White House luncheon for senators' spouses on May 5, 1975. Following the prom, the tablecloths were donated to the White House courtesy of Wamsutta. Floral arrangements were also prepared by members of the prom committee, and included yellow tulips, daisies, orange carnations, white sweet peas, mid-century lillies, and ming fern.
