South Portico at Night During 1978 NASCAR Reception
This photograph, taken by National Geographic photographer Steve Raymer, shows the South Portico of the White House illuminated at night. The silhouettes of members of the United States Marine Band can be seen on the lower balcony. This photograph was taken on September 13, 1978, when members of the National Association for Stock Car Racing (NASCAR) community were invited to a dinner and concert on the South Lawn. President Jimmy Carter issued the invitations but was unable to attend, as he was involved with Middle East peace talks at Camp David.
