Orpen, who had completed several sketches and paintings of the war's brutal battlefields, became the official painter at the conference, also completing portraits of the prime ministers of Italy, France, and Britain. Wilson had been governor of New Jersey and served as president from March 4, 1913 until March 4, 1921.
