Recognizable for their orange-hued kilts, the Irish pipe band was based in Babylon, New York and came to the North Portico of the White House to serenade the Carter family ahead of St. Patrick's Day.

A holiday tradition since 1981, proceeds from the Official White House Christmas Ornament support the White House Historical Association's educational mission of enhancing public knowledge of the White House and preserving the White House Collection. The Official White House Christmas Ornament is also a part of the annual holiday decorations at the White House, and has been featured in a variety of locations including the Blue Room, Vermeil Room, and Library.

The football was from the University of Southern California Trojans football team. Reagan did not attend USC, but played football in college and retained a lifelong interest in the sport. Reagan played offensive and defensive right guard on the Eureka College football team in Illinois from 1929-1931.

For President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan's first holiday season at the White House, Chef Raffert created a gingerbread house with details including a well made from gingerbread and a path made from jelly beans, the president's favorite treat. Raffert's A-frame style gingerbread houses were a traditional part of the White House holiday decorations from 1969-1991.

    This photograph, taken by Mary Anne Fackelman on January 20, 1985, shows President Ronald Reagan tossing a coin at the start of Super Bowl XIX. President Reagan could not attend the final match between the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers, as the game was scheduled for the same day as his second inauguration ceremony. Nonetheless, Reagan made sports history, as the first president to perform the coin toss for the Super Bowl. The coin toss was broadcast live from the Map Room of the White House.

Little did he know the grand bash Mrs. Reagan had in store, with over 100 guests, including many celebrity friends from California, such as James Stewart and Frank Sinatra, lighting by interior designer Ted Graber, and over ten cakes created by White House Executive Chef Henry Haller and White House Executive Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier. Maitre d'hotel John W. Ficklin can be seen over Mesnier's shoulder on the right side of the photograph. In the center of the photograph stands White House Executive Chef Henry Haller, who was soon to retire from the position, which he had held since 1966. Haller's successor, Jon Hill, stands to the immediate left of Haller. On October 1, 1987, Hill became the first American-born chef to hold the title of White House executive chef, though he resigned in January 1988. White House Assistant Executive Chef Hans Raffert, pictured in this photograph to the immediate right of Haller, stepped up to the position of executive chef, which he held until 1992. Raffert was the first White House Kitchen staff member to be promoted to the position of executive chef. Also included in this photograph is White House Pastry Chef Roland Mesnier (far left), assistant pastry chef Franette McCulloch (third from left), and kitchen steward Adam Collick (second from right).
