This photograph of President Warren G. Harding attending at baseball game at Yankee Stadium was taken on April 24, 1923. President Harding attended the game the same month the historic stadium opened on April 18th. Harding, alongside Postmaster General Harry S. New, Dr. Charles E. Sawyer, President Harding’s personal doctor, businessman Albert Davis Lasker, and Jacob Ruppert, owner of the Yankees, watched the Yankees defeat the Washington Senators, 4-0.

This painting of American flags on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is by one of the most prominent American Impressionists of the early 20th century, Frederick Childe Hassam (known to many as Childe Hassam). The painting depicts both flags hanging on Fifth Avenue as well as reflections of the flags in water following a rainstorm. The Avenue in the Rain is one of 30 flag paintings of his that coincided with World War I. Fifth Avenue in New York City was frequently decorated with American flags at the time, as the United States debated entry into the war. This piece was completed in February of 1917, barely two months before Congress declared war on Germany on April 6th. Six Hassam pieces are in the White House Collection.

This landscape painting is by noted American Impressionist Frederick Childe Hassam (often referred to as Childe Hassam). It shows a snow-covered New York street. The central figure appears to be a young boy slogging his way through the storm. Six Hassam pieces are in the White House Collection.

This painting by Carl Calusd (sometimes credited as Charles Calusd) is a seascape and cityscape of the Statue of Liberty, the symbol of welcome for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. This Impressionist-style piece shows the Statue of Liberty set against the backdrop of lower Manhattan, with ships large and small around her in the water. Calusd was known for maritime paintings. The painting was a gift presented to the White House in 1909 by Hayozoun Hohannes Topakyan of the Persian consul in New York.

This painting of the Brooklyn Bridge in winter is by Guy C. Wiggins, an American Impressionist who often painted New York City and its five boroughs. Wiggins' painting captures a narrow, snowy, cityscape of the Brooklyn Bridge looming high over its Brooklyn neighborhood with views of the East River and Manhattan in the distance. The White House Historical Association provided partial funding for its donation to the White House Collection.

This landscape is by William J. Glackens and captures Carl Schurz Park in the Upper East Side Manhattan neighborhood of Yorkville in New York City during the early 1920s. Looking out toward the East River and Harlem River, children play in the park along with women out for an afternoon walk. Glackens was an American Realist painter and one of the founders of the Ashcan School.

This landscape and seascape of New York City by Andrew Melrose was completed around 1887 and captures both the leisure and commerce of the era. The left half of the painting shows New York Harbor and the Hudson River full of ships - tugboats, freighters, and barges full of commerce and commercial goods. In contrast, the right half is Battery Park, full of families and friends leisurely strolling and enjoying the beautiful day. Melrose was born in Scotland and immigrated to the United States in the 1850s. He was known for landscapes, including several of New York City and the Hudson River.
